The University of Aberdeen is the third oldest university in Scotland and the fifth oldest in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1495 by the Bishop of Aberdeen and Chancellor of Scotland, William Elphinstone, the university was originally made up of two universities. Namely, King’s College and Marischal College were merged in 1860 forming the present University of Aberdeen.

The university spans over several campuses, with the main university building located in Old Aberdeen and others in Fosterhill and Marischal College located right within the city centre. Lessons at the University of Aberdeen are taught over three colleges, namely The College of Life Sciences & Medicine, The College of Physical Sciences, and The College of Arts and Social Sciences.  Apart from the set curriculum, the university also partakes in a series of research programmes such as the Aberdeen Centre for European Social Research and Scottish Experimental Economics.

The Student Accommodation Office of the university offers its services to help students find accommodation to suit their every need. Whether it is catered or self-catered, accommodation is offered in Old Aberdeen at the Crombie Johnson Halls, at the Hillhead Halls near Seaton Park and at the Elphinstone Flats. These types of accommodation provide students with security and comfort as well as act as ‘a home away from home’. Due to rising demands in student housing requirements, the University of Aberdeen has undertaken the construction of more housing complexes.

Apart from the teaching bodies and accommodation, the University of Aberdeen has more to offer. One being the Museums and Collections, at the university seven museums host a collection of artefacts and items of national and international importance. The museums include the Anatomy Museum, The Pathology & Forensic Medicine Collection, The Marischal Museum, The Geological Museum, Geological Collections, Natural Philosophy Collection, University Herbarium and Zoology Museum. Another option is provided to those who cannot physically visit the Marischal Museum, which is the Marischal Virtual Museum. Image captures, annotations and 3D Virtual Reality views are provided to those who opt to use this feature.  Apart from the museums, the University of Aberdeen offers visitors the option of taking home a piece of this historical body at the university gift shop. Whether it is a sweatshirt, a university scarf or even a University of Aberdeen teddy bear, buy a souvenir to remind you of every aspect of the University of Aberdeen.

With open days hosted throughout the year, make sure to visit the University of Aberdeen when in Scotland. An Aberdeen hotel located close to the university, the Copthorne Hotel Aberdeen offers cosy rooms and quality amenities coupled with warm hospitality to guests.
