Beautiful, serene and full of splendour, Cardiff Castle in Wales represents over 2000 years of history within its walls having been originally been constructed as Roman Garrison, then being used as a Norman stronghold until finally during the Victorian era it was transformed into a Gothic fairytale fantasy.

The Romans originally constructed the fort somewhere at the end of the 50’s AD and selected the site due to its excellent location that provided access to the sea. According to archeological excavations this was only one of four such forts that were constructed on the site, each of a different size.

During the Norman Conquest the site was used to build the castle and the site was divided into outer and inner wards by a huge stone wall. With the passing of time the fort was eventually handed down to several noble families until it eventually became the property of the Bute family through marriage.

The 2nd Marquess of the Bute family was responsible for turning the fort into the world’s greatest exporting port. Eventually it was passed to his son, the 3rd Marquess of Bute who was reputed to be the richest man in the world.

The 3rd Marquess hired a renowned architect William Burgess to transform the entire castle. It was through the effort of Burgess that the castle stands in its grand and lavish state today.

The castle was eventually handed to the City of Cardiff after the death of the 4th Marquess of Bute. Since then the castle has gone on to become one of the biggest attractions in Wales. Guests today can still discover the handiwork of William Burgess throughout the castle that transformed the structure into a medieval castle. This rebuilding started with the clock tower and was followed by the construction of several other towers that together formed a medieval skyline that is even today best viewed from Bute Park.

Enter Cardiff Castle and discover the fantastical wonders of the Arab Room, the Chaucer Room, the Winter and Summer Smoking Rooms, and Lord Bute’s Bedroom. The rooms all appear as authentic medieval castle rooms despite their significantly later construction date. Interiors are lavish and spare no expense in their mimicry of the style. Visitors to the castle can take a trip to this extremely well preserved tribute to medieval architecture that was built on a historically significant plot of land.
