One of the largest stadiums in the United Kingdom, Millennium Stadium is most commonly used for Rugby Union matches and international football matches. It has also been used for musical events, exhibitions and even motor sport events.

The stadium was originally built so that both Cardiff’s and Wales’ home matches would not be played at the same venue. Since its original construction the stadium has undergone numerous changes to keep up with the changing times and has been involved in four redevelopment efforts.

The stadium today has the ability to handle a capacity of 75,400 spectators. The roof can be brought down to protect the turf from harsh effects of the weather, and the stadium is the second largest in the world to have this feature.

The actual pitch itself also features some impressive technology from GreenTech ITM. The pitch is laid out on a number of pallets that allow it to be moved out of the way so that the stadium can be used for other events like musical concerts.  In addition the ground also features built in drainage and irrigation.

Another interesting fact about the stadium is that it is home to a hawk known as “Dad”. This hawk is used by the stadium owners to intentionally drive away seagulls and pigeons from the stadium itself.

Millennium Stadium is also used for motor sports and has hosted the Speedway Grand Prix since 2007.  It has also been the venue of the first ever indoor stage of the World Rally Championship during the Wales Great Rally in September 2005.

Like many of the other great stadiums of the world, Millennium Stadium has been also been used for musical performances and concerts. Some notable music artists who have graced the stadium with their performances include Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Madonna, Robbie Williams, U2 and Red Hot Chili Peppers to name a few.

TV episodes and films have also been filmed at the stadium including two episodes of the cult BBC Science Fiction TV series Doctor Who, certain segments of the movie 28 Weeks Later and the Hindi film Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.

The stadium will also be used for the 2012 Olympics to host some of the football events along with several other stadiums in the country.
