The
Dudley Zoo is located within the grounds
of the historic Dudley Castle and is one of the major attractions of the Black Country, British
Midlands. Having been established in the year 1935, the Dudley Zoo is filled with interesting
architecture that provides a glimpse of history.
Among them is the 11th century Dudley Castle that towers above the zoo and is an excellent
example of Norman architecture. A visit to the zoo would also mean a visit to the castle as the two
are inseparable. Apart from this a number of buildings of the zoo have been recognized as being
architecturally significant and are under a conservation program.
Being a zoo dedicated to the conservation of endangered and threatened species, the Dudley
Zoo takes care of many such animals from all over the world. The Zoo also carries out an "Adopt an
Animal" program which allows visitors to participate first hand with the conservation effort.
The 40 acre expansive site of the zoo and the backdrop of a medieval castle make this a
unique attraction. More than 900 animals of 160 different species and the naturalistic enclosures
also make it an interesting place to visit. Exotic animals such as lions and tigers and the more
playful orangutans, chimpanzees and the comical penguins are just a few of the popular inmates at
the Zoo.
