Experience the romance of the golden days of rail, chugging along at a leisurely pace along one of the most scenic rail routes in England. The Severn Valley Railway is a 16 mile long scenic heritage railway line that harks back to the good old days of steam powered British engines. The 16 mile/ 26 kilometer track runs along the scenic River Severn that flows across the valley. This heritage route from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster is hauled by beautifully preserved steam engines some of which are over 100 years old.

From a historical point of view the route has been used for transport for over 100 years from 1862 to 1963. Along the route one would encounter the Victoria Bridge which is a massive 200 foot single span bridge over the Severn River.

Since the road network in this rural yet scenic area is largely non-existent, the only way to enjoy the peaceful countryside is via the Severn Valley Railway. The old fashioned charm of this journey is further heightened by the quaint "old world" stations filled with bright flowers and wrought iron architecture. These small country stations give access to the villages and walking trails in the valley.

Visitors staying at Dudley hotels such as the Copthorne Hotel Merry Hill Dudley should definitely get on board the Severn Valley Railway and experience the unspoiled English countryside. Travelers can also enjoy some local delicacies and West Midlands cuisine on their journey from the restaurant car which also serves up a special Sunday Luncheon. The visitor's information centre has a special collection of restored steam engines at its "Engine House" where you can explore the history of the British Railways and look at precious historical artifacts.
