Opened for public passenger flights in June 1938, this major airport was originally known as Ringway Airport. During the Second World War the airport was renamed as RAF Ringway signifying its military purpose during that time period. From 1975 till 1986 the airport bore the name Manchester International Airport before ending up with its current name, Manchester Airport.
