Location & Attractions|Stadium of Light and St. James ParkThe Stadium of Light was originally opened in 1997, seats up to 47,000 spectators and is the home stadium of Sunderland A.F.C. The stadium is famous for being recognized as the "Loudest stadium" in the United Kingdom, an honour which it has won on more than one occasion. This merit has been awarded due to the stadium's unusual bowl structure that encloses sound and amplifies its volume, thereby creating a more vibrant atmosphere. St James Park on the other hand is the oldest stadium in the North East of England and serves as the home of the Newcastle United Football Club. With a spectator capacity of 52,387 the stadium is the third largest in the Premier League and the seventh largest in the United Kingdom. Beyond football however this stadium has been used for various other purposes including musical concerts, football charity events, as well as a film set. Musical guests have included The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams, Bob Dylan, and Rod Stewart. The Stadium also has the distinction of being one of only 6 stadiums in the United Kingdom that have been declared fit for being used as international stadium venues for the World Cup. Football lovers traveling to Newcastle should not pass up the opportunity to witness a fantastic game of football being played at either of these venues. Staying in a hotel in Newcastle upon Tyne such as Copthorne Hotel Newcastle not only provides guests with a range of amenities and comforts but also convenient access to both of these stadiums. |
