Location & Attractions|The CastleBeing one of the finest examples of a surviving Norman keep, visitors can freely walk through the structure and its many exhibits. The castle is open to visitors 365 days of the year. When viewing the structure from afar, guests will be impressed with the magnificence of this charming and authentic castle. Upon entering guests will find themselves on the ground floor which is home to two distinct areas known today as the Chapel and the Garrison Room. The Chapel is located underneath the main entrance staircase and presents a unique perspective of what life must have been in the Middle Ages. The Garrison Room features some alterations that were made after the medieval era during which time it was used as a prison. Some of the highlights that are located on this floor include the elaborate chamfered base in the wall of the keep, the multi angular North West Tower, and the garderobe shafts. The King's chamber was a room that once served as an apartment and features a fireplace and garderobe. Visitors to the chamber can also glimpse the various pieces of graffiti left behind by the civil garrison that was once stationed here. Another attraction is the Exterior Wall that once surrounded the entire castle. Much of this wall has worn away with the effects of time but enough of it still stands to convey the sense of grandeur the completed wall once generated. The Castle overall presents a thought provoking insight in to what life would have been like in a medieval castle. While some alterations have been made since the medieval ages, the majority of the castle has remained mostly unchanged. This interesting piece of architecture and interior design should not be missed. Copthorne Hotel Newcastle offers an ideal accommodation choice that provides guests easy access to The Castle. From the hotel, Newcastle upon Tyne and its many other attractions can be traversed and explored. In addition the hotel also offers an array of amenities that ensures guests of a comfortable stay. |
