history that dates back to 1176, it’s impossible not to be amazed and belittled by this church that
continues to promote Christianity in a modern approach in a traditional setting.
The Beauchief Abbey was founded as a tribute to the life of St. Thomas a Becket in Canterbury
Cathedral. The architecture is typical of the century with some modifications taking place over the
years. The tower of the church is one of the most original pieces found, with its last remodeling
taking place in the 14th century. The door is Early English while the large window on the west was
created in the 14th century.
The pews in the front of the church are from the 17th century, while those at the rear end of
the church are new additions. The pulpit also harks from the 17th century and has similar carvings
to the pews. There is also a cemetery which is considered part of the Beauchief Abbey. The
prayer book in use dates back to 1622. Sunday worship is still a regular practice, while they are
open to special requests for baptism, wedding blessings, funerals, memorial services and
celebration services.
Today the church is part of the Anglican Community which is the Church of England. There are
no appointed priests or clergy, but a volunteer clergy leads the services. The church is owned by
the people of Sheffield, and was handed over from the Church of England is 1932.
