The town of Windsor is one of those quintessentially English areas of sedate suburbia adorned with stately historic dwellings amid the spectacular backdrop of the great River Thames cutting a swathe across its lush valleys. The historic town, one the country's most exclusive suburban areas, commands certain diffidence as the home of the Queen and offers plenty to engage its visitors.

Foremost among the man-made objects of interest, of course, is Windsor Castle, home of the reigning royal family of Windsor. The luxuriant State Apartments and St Georges Chapel are also open to visitors' exploration. The changing of the castle guards is a ceremonious event that takes place with great pomp at the Victoria Barracks, to the accompaniment of marches played by the guards' band. On a divergent note, LEGOLAND is a modern children's amusement park near Windsor which enjoys great popularity.

The natural attractions in Windsor are amply showcased by its parkland, chief among which emerges Windsor Great Park. This massive sprawl of greenery is located behind the castle and is inclusive of the Long Walk, a 5 mile stretch that takes one past the Copper Horse Statue to the Virginia Water Lake beside which resides Windsor's other great park, the Savill Gardens. This is a beautiful temperate woodland known for its wealth of blooms.

Runnymede is another quietly beautiful area of riverside meadows and woodsy wilderness which holds unparalleled historic importance in the country as the site of the Magna Carta signing. The grounds are also home to several notable memorials, including the Air Forces Memorial honouring the airmen and women lost to the Second World War as well as Britain's tribute to the assassinated American President, John F. Kennedy.

All this comes within easy reach for guests of the Copthorne Hotel Slough Windsor, making the hotel one of the best bases to optimise their Windsor sightseeing experience.
