About Dudley, England
The British Isles are peppered with towns and cities that are proud of their cultural and social
heritage, few more so than the West Midlands town of Dudley in the heart of England's Black Country
region. A large part of Dudley's history is represented by its castle, which has stood since the
11th century and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Today, Dudley Castle is one of the town's
premier tourist attractions and boasts an impressive location atop an outcrop of limestone.
Dudley Castle has links to a number of important moments in history, but one of its more fun
associations is the fact that it was the very first live venue for the TV show Most Haunted Live on
October 31st 2002.
Visitors to the Copthorne Hotel Merry Hill Dudley will find that the castle offers more than an
impressive historical spectacle, as its grounds also house Dudley Zoo. The Zoo plays host to a
number of events that visitors can get involved in, such as the Barnardo's Big Toddle on June 3rd,
4th and 12th. This occasion gives parents and children the opportunity to do their bit for charity
by gaining sponsorship for a half-mile walk. Last year, more than 400,000 toddlers took part in the
event, raising some £1.4 million for children's charity Barnardo's.
Dudley Castle has a reputation as one of England's haunted locations and people with an interest
in the spooky and supernatural will be able to entertain themselves with a number of events this
year. Richard Felix from Most Haunted will host two ghost hunts later in the year, on July 25th and
October 11th. These occasions will include ghost walks, psychic fairs and talks by the TV star, and
a licensed bar will be available for those that need to steady their nerves.
Another highlight for many visitors to Dudley is the Black Country Living Museum, an
establishment that is firmly rooted in the past, with historic buildings from around the Black
Country authentically rebuilt. Some 26 acres of living history comprise the museum, including a
range of modern exhibition halls, an underground coalmine, a tramcar and demonstrations of
metalworking, sweet-making and glass-cutting.
Dudley is a town that is proud of its history and heritage but it also offers its visitors a
range of modern amenities and entertainment options, at venues including Dudley Concert Hall. The
hall will host a number of events over the coming months, including a gig by tribute band Queen on
Fire this month, a show by controversial comic Jim Davidson on May 10th and a performance by Phil
Kelsall, organist at the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool, on May 13th.
Visitors who fancy making a trip out of the town to explore the surrounding areas have the whole
of the West Midlands to choose from. The city of Birmingham is home to a host of venues, including
the NEC and the National Indoor Arena, which regularly hold major events, while located a short
drive away is Cadbury World. The exhibits at this centre dedicated to all things chocolate are as
fascinating as they are mouth-watering.
While its sights and attractions vary from historical and culturally significant to flippant and
fun, one thing that is guaranteed not to change in Dudley is the unique and memorable experience it
offers to visitors.
