About Manchester, England

Manchester is one of the many locations in England that can contest the title of 'second city'. The role has traditionally been filled by Birmingham in recent years, but rapid improvement and growth in cities such as Manchester, Newcastle and Liverpool gives them a strong claim to being London's northern counterpart.

A large portion of Manchester's development followed the IRA bombing of 1996 and was aided by the Commonwealth Games, which was held in the city in 2002. The city centre was one of the biggest beneficiaries of the improvement, with new complexes including the Printworks entertainment venue, the Triangle shopping centre and the Manchester Arndale mall.

The range of developments that have taken place in Manchester in recent years has made the city more attractive than ever for visitors from the UK and around the world, who are well served by establishments such as the Copthorne Hotel Manchester.

While Manchester is a modern and progressive city, it also provides plenty of points of interest for people who like to take a retrospective view on life. The Imperial War Museum (IWM) is located at The Quays, Manchester's unique waterfront destination, and is currently involved in a Manchester Tourism Awards vote for visitors' favourite place in the city.

Until April 27th this year, the museum will hold an exhibition looking at the life and work of the photographer George Rodger, which was organised to celebrate the centenary of the artist's birth. Rodger captured many aspects of modern warfare, including the Blitz in 1940 and various experiences that occurred at the end of World War II.

Another poignant exhibition currently on display at the IWM is Remember, which celebrates the 90th anniversary of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The commission was founded towards the end of the First World War and takes on the massive task of commemorating the men and women of Commonwealth forces who died in the two world wars.

As with its fellow northern cities of Newcastle and Liverpool, Manchester is known for its love of football and the popularity of its two clubs attracts floods of sports fans to the city every weekend.

The conclusion to the 2007-08 season is set to be a hugely exciting one for both the red- and blue-shirt wearing fans of Manchester.

Manchester City are enjoying one of their most successful seasons for years and are right in the middle of the battle for one of the Premier League's top six places, which guarantee European football. Sven Goran Eriksson's men face some massive games before the end of the year, including a clash against Tottenham Hotspur on March 16th and a game against title-chasers Chelsea on April 5th.

Manchester United's concerns this year will relate to the league's number one spot, as they battle it out with Arsenal and Chelsea for the trophy. Hotel visitors who are hoping to make it to one of the Red Devils' games may be able to see them play deadly rivals Liverpool on March 23rd or Arsenal on April 12th.

One thing that visitors to Manchester will be guaranteed is an experience of a city that is proud, passionate and unlike any other.
