About Plymouth, England
Like most of the United Kingdom's major cities, Plymouth has a fascinating and varied history,
which can be fully explored by visiting a number of the area's local sites. The Elizabethan House
museum is an ideal location for visitors to start their voyage through Plymouth's history, while
the Merchant's House is the city's best surviving example of a 16th or 17th century residence.
People enjoying a stay at the Copthorne Hotel Plymouth who want to delve deep into the history
and culture of the area can visit the City Museum and Art Gallery, which will reopen later this
year following refurbishment. Two new exhibitions, focusing on ceramics and landscapes, will mark
the partial reopening of the museum on May 3rd.
Visitors who prefer to spend their time outside will be able to find 950 hectares of parks, open
spaces, woodlands and other outdoor areas in Plymouth. One of the most popular areas for a day out
is Central Park on Outland Road, which offers panoramic views of the city centre and Plymouth
Sound, as well as a pitch and putt area, walking trails and an adventure playground to keep the
youngsters happy.
For some evening entertainment, this city in the south-west of England offers plenty of options,
with a multitude of restaurants, theatres, bars, cinemas and nightclubs.
One of the first ports of call for many people who have planned a trip to the city is the
Plymouth Pavilions, a major venue that will host some of the most popular and successful figures in
modern music this year.
Icelandic superstar Bjork will perform at the Pavilions on April 22nd, followed by tribute act
the Australian Pink Floyd Show on April 23rd. The Kooks will entertain the crowds on May 3rd,
before fellow indie rockers the Pigeon Detectives provide the conclusion for the month's
entertainment on May 29th. Comedy fans will also find a lot to keep them entertained at the
Plymouth Pavilions. Veteran double-act French and Saunders will bring their nationwide tour to the
venue on April 1st and 2nd, while Dara O'Briain will provide the comic entertainment on May
10th.
Plymouth's Theatre Royal is another of the city's evening entertainment hotspots and there will
be a host of top shows taking to the stage in April for the entertainment of visitors.
Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker is one of the most popular productions ever staged at Plymouth and in
April it will be given a triumphant return, running from April 8th to 12th. The high-brow cultural
offerings will continue throughout the month, with the Welsh National Opera presenting Mozart's
fantastic tale of The Magic Flute on April 15th and 18th, followed by Eugene Onegin on April 16th
and 19th and the popular comedy Falstaff on April 17th.
There is plenty of carefree fun to be had at the Theatre Royal as well, however, with the
Grufffalo live show taking to the stage on April 3rd and breathless spy caper The 39 Steps running
from April 28th to May 3rd.
When all the music, culture and history gets too much, Plymouth's coastal location ensures that
there are plenty of places for visitors to sit down and rest tired legs in front of a picturesque
sea view.
