About Sheffield
Located in South Yorkshire, Sheffield is one of the eight largest cities in the United Kingdom.
The city obtained worldwide recognition for its steel production facilities during the 19th
century. Many innovations in the industry were produced here including stainless steel and
crucible. As a result during the Industrial Revolution there was a massive population increase in
the city.
But beyond its traditional importance as a steel producer the city also has various other
important aspects that it is famous for today including its sports, museum and musical connections
as well as being at the meeting point of 5 different rivers. The city also has a high concentration
of trees which has earned it the reputation as being the city in Europe with the highest number of
trees per person.
Sheffield is also a city that is rich with silver screen history as it has been the filming
site of several different movies including The Full Monty and When Saturday Comes. It is also the
host of the United Kingdom’s leading documentary festival, The Sheffield International Documentary
Festival.
Sheffield also features a rich sporting tradition that has carried on through the years. The
city was the site of the world’s first ever football club, Sheffield F.C., and it was also the
location of the world’s first amateur league.
Sheffield boasts many international sporting venues, the city is known as “Snooker City”, with
the Snooker World Championship being held at the Crucible Theatre. The English Squash tournament is
also held in Sheffield every year as well as the International Open Bowls tournament.
Several museums are also housed here providing glimpses in to various aspects of the past and
present. Museums housed in the city include the Kelham Island Museum, Weston Park Museum, The
Sheffield Fire and Police Museum and Shepherd Wheel. A museum of particular interest is the
National Centre for Popular Music that symbolises the city’s strong connection to music.
Numerous beautiful nature related attractions are also on offer including the Peace Gardens and
the Sheffield Winter Gardens for guests to peruse at their own leisure. Sheffield also houses
several large parks that are ideal for recreational and relaxation purposes. Sheffield actually has
50 public parks scattered throughout the city; the largest of which, the Peak District National
Park, lies at the southern end of the Pennine Hills just 5 miles from the city centre. One third of
Sheffield lies within its boundaries and visitors to the west of the city will see how easily
Sheffield nestles into the gently rolling moors and rugged peaks combining city and country for the
perfect short break.
