While Chelsea is famous for its prominent football club, the club itself is technically not
located in Chelsea itself and is actually in the neighbouring Fulham Broadway.
One of the most interesting buildings in the area is the Royal Chelsea Hospital. The hospital
is actually a retirement home for British soldiers who have become unfit for duty either due to old
age or injury. As of June 2004, the Royal Chelsea Hospital was home to around 310 soldiers.
Besides this primary function the beautiful grounds of the hospital that feature lush
greenery has been the setting of the Chelsea Flower Show since 1913. One of the prominent features
of the garden is the 7’ 6” statue of King Charles II. The statue was not originally constructed to
be housed in the Royal Chelsea Hospital but it has been its home since it was moved in 1692.
The Duke of York’s Headquarters was originally a military barracks for the British Army until
it was converted in to a selection of shops and cafes. It is also located in this area where the
weekly farmers market is held.
Kings Road in Chelsea offers a range of shopping options for visitors and is considered as
one of the trendiest and upscale shopping streets in London. The street offers everything from
designer clothes, jewellery, watches and cosmetics.
Also housed on Kings Road is The Chelsea Collection. This collection features a variety of
prints and pictures of Chelsea that were created by a range of different artists. The collection
was founded in 1887 and featured over 5,000 pieces of art at the end of the 20th century and the
collection is still growing. Viewing the Chelsea Collection today provides a rich and insightful
glimpse in to the past of this prominent area.
Chelsea is also home to an impressive art gallery that is housed inside the Chelsea College
of Art and Design. This gallery is the largest open air gallery in London. The gallery is also used
to screen films. The university also has another gallery that is known as The Triangle Gallery and
this gallery is used to showcase the work of students throughout the year.
When visiting London one should not miss the range of attractions that are housed in the
prominent area of Chelsea. Hotel guests of Millennium and Copthorne Hotels at Chelsea Football Club
can benefit from the hotel’s outstanding location that provides convenient access to the variety of
attractions in the area.
