The Royal Botanic Kew Gardens features an extensive garden and botanical glasshouses. The
gardens are today a leading centre of botanical research and functions as a training ground for
professional gardeners. The Kew Gardens is an extremely popular attraction amongst visitors to
London and attracts thousands of visitors each year.
Visitors to the garden can find a range of attractions that are varied in their themes,
despite most being nature related.
Kew Palace is the smallest Royal Palace in the United Kingdom and features a construction
method that is known as Flemish Bond. This method features laying bricks with long and short sides
alternating. The rear of the building also features an impressive garden that features every plant
in England that was not in the island prior to seventeenth century.
Kew Gardens also houses a museum and art gallery that allows visitors to indulge themselves
in a variety of art related attractions. The Marianne North Gallery features the artwork of
Marianne North who travelled along to many parts of North and South America as well as Asia. She
painted plants from around the world in a time when women rarely travelled outside their home
country which gives the gallery a unique feature to it that separates it from the art of that time
period.
The gardens also feature a pagoda that was constructed in 1762. This interesting structure
features two dragons which are falsely believed to have featured gold plating that was sold by
Henry the VIII to settle his debts. In actuality the dragons were painted to look like they were
made of gold and the paint had since faded off with the passing of time.
A range of other varying attractions are also housed here including Museum No. 1 that
features a range of different artwork on the theme of man’s dependence on plant life while Minka
House is a Japanese wooden home that was originally constructed in Okazaki in 1900. The structure
was later moved to and relocated inside the garden. Guided tours are also on offer free of charge
to visitors who wish to learn more about the gardens.
Visitors to Kew Garden can find a variety of botanically related exhibits and artwork. When
in Chelsea this grand reserve of nature should not be missed.
Millennium and Copthorne Hotels at Chelsea Football Club is a London hotel near Kew Gardens
that offers convenient access to this attraction and several others in the area.
