Location & Attractions|Gallery of Modern ArtThe Gallery of Modern Art originally opened in 1996 and was refurbished once in order to house the city’s contemporary art collection. The structure itself provides an intriguing mix of old and new architecture fused together. The Gallery of Modern Art is divided in to four floors each of which represents one of the four elements of nature; fire, earth, water and air respectively. The Gallery of Modern Art has enthralled a huge number of visitors since its inception and continues to grow in this regard by attracting new visitors from new demographics. A huge array of art from various artists can be found here. Artists whose work is present in the museum includes names such as David Hockney, Andy Warhol, Ken Currie and Sebastian Salgado. The museum also has a dedicated art and education centre that is used for workshops and discussions with artists. At the basement of the museum is the Library that offers a café, Internet access terminals, art, and multimedia in addition to general book lending facilities. One of the other interesting attractions is the statue of the Duke of Wellington that is located at the entrance. A general incident that kept recurring was that citizens would place a traffic cone on the statues head. Authorities attempted to stop this but were ultimately unsuccessful. This event has become a popular story regarding the statue and in one instance during the 2002 UEFA Championship League the cone was replaced with an official football patterned hat.
