The Science Museum

An epitome of knowledge and ingenuity, the Science Museum is home to many historical artifacts acquired through the ages. The Science Museum provides not only a taste of history but also inspires the minds of the new generation.

A prime attraction in London, the Science Museum which is located on Exhibition Road in South Kensington is a part of the National Museum of Science and Industry. The Science Museum was founded in 1857 with collections of artifacts from the Royal Society of Arts and the Great Exhibition.

The museum offers interactive exhibitions such as the ‘Wellcome Wing’ catering to digital technology and the IMAX 3D Cinema which offers insight into science and nature through documentaries. The Science Museum is also home to many famous exhibits such as Puffing Billy (the oldest surviving steam locomotive), the first jet engine as well as a working example of Charles Babbage's Difference Engine.

Housing many artifacts related to medicine, the fourth floor gallery offers the “Glimpses of Medical History” exhibition whereas the fifth floor presents Science and the Art of Medicine. Apart from medical science, and looking into other variation of the subject, the Science Museum instated a new exhibition called ‘The Science of Survival’ in 2008, which provides visitors insight into the expected harsh conditions that man will be faced with due to climate change and energy shortages in the year 2050.

An exhibition catering to youngsters, the ‘Science Night’ is an all-night scientific celebration that has a capacity of accommodating over 380 individuals at a time. Children of ages spanning from 8 to 11 accompanied by their guardians are allowed to partake in various scientific activities and camp in the museum amongst artifacts.

As the Science Museum does not charge a fee for its donation of knowledge, any person who wishes to discover a world of innovation may do so free of charge. Visit the Science Museum when in the area and stay at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel London Kensington, a contemporary luxury hotel in London, UK.
