News|See the icons of a revolutionThe British Museum is presenting an exhibition this year comprising items that once served as icons for a revolution. Some five billion badges were made in China during the cultural revolution, a movement that spanned a decade between 1966 and 1976 and was intended to overhaul the country's old ideologies. Badges were worn as part of everyday dress and served as an expression of loyalty to Chairman Mao Zedong and the Communist Party of China. Most of the badges included in the British Museum exhibition feature images of Mao, while others refer to scenes from his life, political events or speeches. Mao badges are still collected in China today and they offer an interesting perspective on a political figure who continues to cause controversy today, more than 30 years after his death. The exhibition features a number of other items related to Mao Zedong, including posters, books and currency from the 1930s to the present day. London hotel visitors will be able to see the display at the British Museum until September 14th.
