The Houses of Parliament are one of the most historically rich sites to visit in England. It
comprises of several significant buildings that together form the official seat from which the
government formulates, debates and implements the laws and policies that govern England as a whole.
Picturesquely located in Westminster along the River Thames, the Houses of Parliament are also
commonly known as the Palace of Westminster. During the 11th century, the palace served as the
residence of the King. The House of Lords began communing at this venue from the year 1265 onwards,
whilst the House of Commons was moved here in 1547. Today, both of Britain’s parliamentary houses
meet at this venue for governing purposes.
Many of the buildings of the Houses of Parliament were reconstructed in 1870 after a fire
destroyed much of the complex in 1834. The House of Commons Chamber was also rebuilt again in 1950
after it was destroyed during the Second World War. All the structures of the Houses of Parliament
bear a tasteful Gothic architectural design. Some of the most popular buildings at this venue
include the Commons Chamber, the Lords Chamber, the Victoria Tower and the Lobbies. Perhaps the
most recognised structure of the lot is the Westminster Palace’s elegant clock-tower that is
commonly associated as a landmark with the Houses of Parliament. This tower is also known among the
locals as Big Ben due to its large bell.
